The Wicked Uncle
The Wicked Uncle
Edinburgh Film Guild New Cinema 3 is proud to present the UK premiere of darkly comic Swiss masterpiece The Wicked Uncle (Der böse Onkel). A film equally fascinating for its style, innovative approach to controversial subject matter and for its unique production scheme.
The Wicked Uncle is a fragmented, joyously anarchic, almost slightly schizophrenic work. In the midst of monologues, we are shown clapperboards. One memorable sequence is literally brought to a breaking halt, what follows are the still images of the production disaster which occurred during its filming.
Using such masterful technique to frame the film’s wilfully controversial subject matter – misogyny, homophobia and xenophobia being just a few of its open targets – only deepens it, adding an extra dimension of visual wit to the proceedings. Irreverence balances discomfort. All par for the course for director Urs Odermatt, whose work acknowledges influences ranging from Krzysztof Kieślowski (whom he studied under) to Irvine Welsh (he directed a stage version of Trainspotting for Swiss theatre).
We are therefore delighted to confirm that Urs Odermatt and the film’s producer Jasmin Morgan will attend the screening and participate in a Q&A following the film.
