Women at War is a collection of photographs about the challenging and sometimes brutal situations faced by women in times of war. Women and girls in conflict-affected countries face unimaginable risks, danger and challenges, experiencing war as victims and survivors, combatants and peacemakers.

The Women at War exhibition showcases the active role women play in conflicts, challenging the image of women as helpless victims. The exhibition gives a moving and thought-provoking perspective on the experience of women during conflict, whether as survivors, fighters, or agents of peace. It features powerful and moving images of female fighters of the Peshmerga in Iraq from Middle East-based photographer Jacob Russell, of Israeli and Palestinian women from American photographer Heidi Levine, and images from around the world from the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Collection.

The exhibition is presented by Beyond Borders Scotland, a not-for profit organisation, dedicated to facilitating dialogue and international cultural exchange. Beyond Borders works through several mediums – literature, arts, film, politics and dialogue – to harness Scotland’s unique heritage to provide a platform to cultural leaders from around the world to exchange experiences, in an effort to promote understanding and help reduce conflict. It seeks to facilitate rather than prescribe its cultural output.
