Savage Mansion return with their fourth album ‘The Shakes‘, and an Edinburgh headline show in support of their strongest, boldest record yet – a set of 11 songs which better than ever capture the explosive live energy of a band whose best gig is always their next gig.
Recorded live to tape with minimal overdubs at Analogue Catalogue – the Newry, Northern Ireland analogue studio of producer Julie McLarnon (The Vaselines, Brigid Mae Power, Barbarossa) – The Shakes is full of raw and instinctual playing, happy accidents embraced and not glossed over. It’s the end product of months of patient and painstaking groundwork, with principal songwriter Craig Angus working closely with guitarist Andrew Macpherson to shape and re-shape ideas, until they represented the most adventurous version of the band to date.
Lead single ‘There Goes My Habit‘ draws inspiration from the poetry of Dave Berman and the esoteric pop of Arthur Russell. Opener ‘Myths Persist’ orbits a rakish groove inspired by Sly and the Family Stone, and draws lyrics from among other unlikely places the Bible (“what’s it there for if not that?”)‘. Arguably the stand-out track on the record, ‘Present Tense’ imagines “Richard Thompson playing in the Velvet Underground,” says Andrew.
A record rooted in a deep well of emotion, and the rigorously thought-through reasoning of writers thoroughly in love with their influences. Support comes from Martha Ffion (Lost Map Records), with a full band set of songs from 2023’s acclaimed album The Wringer, and Buffet Lunch, a Scottish group who make it their mission to craft satisfyingly imperfect pop songs filled with imagery and humour.
