Ae Fond Kiss (2004) – screening and discussion.
Director: Ken Loach. Screenwriter: Paul Laverty.
Featuring Atta Yaqub, Eva Birthistle, Shamshad Akhtar, Ahmad Riaz, Ghizala Avan and Shabana Akhtar Bakhsh
Partly conceived as a response to the changing attitudes towards Muslims in the wake of 9/11, Loach’s social-realist drama features a romance between second-generation Glaswegian-Pakistani, Casim, and Irish-Catholic teacher, Roisin. The couple come under intense pressure to split up, and the film explores possibilities for forging relationships that cross barriers of cultural and ethnic identity.
A gripping, hilarious and moving film.
"For Loach and Laverty, Ae Fond Kiss is about assimilation, racism, arranged marriages and the problems of immigrant families... the love affair is not just an element in a bigger story: it is the central focus"The Guardian
