In 1961, one year after he appeared in Breathless (1960) and two years after she appeared in Hiroshima, Mon Amour, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Emmanuelle Riva made Léon Morin, Priest. They were both in the heat of their early careers. The director Jean-Pierre Melville (renowned for his gangster tales), opted for a story at the intersection of desire, religion and politics. Belmondo plays a devoted man of the cloth who is desired by all the women of a small village in Nazi-occupied France.
"Casting the boyish Belmondo as a priest with a missionary bent is one of the intriguing ambiguities of this film"Pacific Film Archive
