Edinburgh trio S!nk perform their epic live soundtrack to Nanook of the North (1922) in support of Filmhouse’s campaign to OPEN THE DOORS. S!nk were originally commissioned by Filmhouse to devise and perform the live score in 2018 as part of an 8-year partnership which saw them creating a suit of new soundtracks to masterpieces of cinema, from The Adventures of Prince Achmed to Faust. In gratitude to the currently closed cinema for its support over so many years all proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Filmhouse fundraiser.

Nanook of the North is one of the most pivotal films in history. Robert Flaherty’s examination of Inuit culture, through the lives of the titular character and his family in the icy Canadian Arctic frontier, came at a time when the concept of ‘documentary’ film didn’t yet exist.

S!nk’s score seeks to juxtapose a sense of pervading and overwhelming harshness with the humorous and resourceful spirits who inhabit this environment, captured through the admiring lens of this protean documentary filmmaker. As the film progresses, heavier electronic sound-elements underpinning the enormous weight of environmental burden find synthesis with the improvised ‘found sounds’ made using, amongst other items, ice, bone and leather that endeavour to describe the lightness, ingenuity and humanity – by turns comical and tragic – of Nanook and his family.

Nanook of the North was listed as the seventh best documentary of all time in Sight & Sound’s 2014 poll.
