What does it mean to be Jewish in modern Scotland? Poets David Bleiman and Ellen Galford explore their Jewish heritage and a common yearning for the lost Yiddish of their grandparents’ generation. Why does David touch wood, spitting toi, toi, toi, for luck? Why does Ellen kiss a stale crust of bread before she can throw it away? And what does any of this have to do with the real historic community of the Southside; the baker and butcher of East Cross Causeway, the burial ground on Sciennes House Place?

Helped by the klezmorim (musicians playing lively klezmer melodies), Phil Alexander and Rowan Bayliss Hawitt, the pair seek answers in words and music. Songs and stories of parting, partisan anthems, tunes for weddings and rabbis to dance to. Songs and stories which bring the past alive and remake it for the present.
