It was first developed in the United States by choreographer Mary Overlie as a technique of composition that provides a vocabulary for heightening awareness and impulse regarding space, movement and gesture. American directors Anne Bogart and Tina Landau evolved The Viewpoints to become a creative system for staging and performance. Instructor Sarah Loveland is from the University of Washington Professional Actor Training program, where The Viewpoints is taught along with Suzuki Technique as core physical training. Join Sarah and other UW students for an introductory workshop over two days and discover a new world of dramatic creation. Water bottles and movement attire, please.

As The Flames Rose We Danced To The Sirens, The Sirens http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/theatre/sirens http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/theatre/sirens#comments Thu, 21 Jul 2011 10:43:53 +0000 admin http://www.summerhall.co.uk/?p=671 Iara is starting to fear the worst. Sheʼs looking for a roomful of strangers whose arms she can fall into. And whilst she knows that she cannot necessarily be trusted, tonight she would like to put herself in your hands…

In an hour of troubling intimacy, by turns comic and tragic, Sleepwalk Collective attempt with joy and desperation to rework the clichés of pop culture and bad B-movies into something heartfelt and profound. This is a cry for help, and itʼs about me, and you, and the strange and sometime frightening connection that is growing between us.

Singapore http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/theatre/singapore http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/theatre/singapore#comments Thu, 21 Jul 2011 10:37:21 +0000 admin http://www.summerhall.co.uk/?p=667 A work of outright conceptual theatre, RJ Thomson’s new play is the actual place of Singapore. A work of site-specific, interactive, durational, socially engaged, conceptual theatre, Singapore is also intended as a full allegory for the human condition. Seriously. For these entertaining discussions, the writer will launch the work by explaining the emotional and theoretical context to the work: it’s quite a story! He will also answer questions. ‘A playwright of a quite fearless and magnificent originality’ (Playwrights Studio Scotland).

Men Avoid Jars http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/theatre/men-avoid-jars http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/theatre/men-avoid-jars#comments Thu, 21 Jul 2011 09:01:20 +0000 admin http://www.summerhall.co.uk/?p=637 Compared to The Mighty Boosh and Peter Cook by the Prague Post, “We Are a Real” Theatre Company presents Men Avoid Jars; an absurd and surreal deconstruction of everything theatre tries to be.  Taking inspiration from Dadaist art and Discordianist symbolism, this two-man show is a musical and visual composition that turns ritual on its head.

Featuring original musical compositions in close harmony, puppetry and post-modern dance, Men Avoid Jars takes inspiration and techniques from a wide variety of theatre practitioners to create a non-narrative spectacle somewhere between the realms of sacrament and sheer silliness.

Kenneth Goldsmith: Sucking on Words http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/sucking-on-words http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/sucking-on-words#comments Thu, 21 Jul 2011 08:41:16 +0000 admin http://www.summerhall.co.uk/?p=618 Presenting a mode of literature more in dialogue with the visual arts than with conventional poetry or fiction, and arguing for a new kind of ‘thinker-ship’ to replace the conventional idea of a ‘readership’, the lively, incisive and accessible conversations in Simon Morris’ film Sucking on Words are an ideal introduction to Goldsmith’s witty and provocative work.

Radio On (18) http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/radio-on http://www.summerhall.co.uk/programme/radio-on#comments Thu, 21 Jul 2011 08:39:11 +0000 admin http://www.summerhall.co.uk/?p=615 RADIO ON
Dir. Christopher Petit
Cast: David Beames, Lisa Kreuzer, Sandy Ratcliff
1979, 104mins, English, 18

A beautiful, melancholic oddity of British cinema, Radio On is a haunting existential road movie set in 1970s England. It follows a young DJ as he drives from London to Bristol following the unexplained death of his brother. Produced by Wim Wenders, whose imprint on the film is undeniable, it is beautifully shot in black and white by his cinematographer Martin Schäfer and accompanied by a memorable New Wave soundtrack including Kraftwerk, Bowie, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric and Lene Lovich.

Dir. Guy Maddin
Cast: Darcy Fehr, Ann Savage and Louis Negin
2007, 80mins, English, 12

There is nothing quite like the world of Guy Maddin. Inspired by the magic and melodrama of films from the silent era, Maddin mixes animation, drama and documentary to create a unique filmic patchwork. In My Winnipeg the director embarks on a personal journey through memory and myth to explore the spell of his hometown. Endlessly inventive, witty and undeniably distinct, there’s no surprise that My Winnipeg has quickly gained a cult following.

“Hypnotic and very funny, this is truly one of a kind” – Total Film
